This is the very best homemade Aeolian Harp Design that I have ever put together myself. After years of exploration and experimentation, this is the very LOUDEST and LARGEST Wind Harps that I've designed to this day.

Listen to the ethereal sounds of these musical instruments in a strong wind!

Oh yeah, don't forget to decide whether you think it should be named the:

  • "Aeolian Harp Kite"

  • "Singing Kite"

  • "Whippor Whirl"

Thankfully, there's only 3 materials involved to get you started!

Materials needed for DIY Aeolian Harp Kite (only 3)

Grosgrain Ribbon

Grosgrain Ribbon

If you've never done this before you MUST buy 3/8" by 100 yards. It doesn't matter what color, all that matters is the correct surface texture (grosgrain), width (7-10mm), and length (100 yards is ideal).

When buying ribbon elsewhere, it's critical to have the following qualities:

  • Correct width (7-10mm)

  • Correct length (At least 100 yards, but no more than)

  • Ideal surface texture (Grosgrain)

Kite Spool

Large Kite Spools

Why is this kite spool so important for Aeolian Harp Kites? I'll tell ya! (The largest spools work best)

These spools (red or yellow) have the following qualities that are essential to Aeolian Harp Kite Flying:

  • The ribbon can lay flat within the spool

  • The spool can help you "finely tune" the fundamental frequency of the kite

  • It's the most user friendly design I've found for this purpose

Delta Kite

Here I am putting together this delta kite that always does the trick!

Large Delta Kite

Why is this kite critical for success with the Aeolian Harp Kite?

This kite has the following qualities that are of utmost importance:

  • Strong pull (for tension)

  • Stable flying (for establishing a rhythm with the ribbon)

  • Easy to tie off to the ribbon included above

That's it! Those are the 3 essential materials to build a homemade DIY Aeolian Harp Kite!

Skills Needed to build your own Aeolian Harp Kite

You must know the following skills:

  • How to tie knots

  • Strength to hold a kite with a "strong pull"

  • Patience to wait for a constant wind in a clear area

Final Remarks!

With this design, there's absolutely NO NEED to mess around with:

  • Tuning Pegs

  • Plastic Bottles

  • Fishing Line

  • Sound Board

  • Steel Strings

  • Harp String

  • Wind Chimes

  • A Window Harp

For good results, all you need is a WINDY DAY!
