Last year, my 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT suffered an engine failure or "blown engine" at 119,000 miles. My mechanic attested to the fact that my vehicle received regular maintenance.

Thanks to Hyundai, I was able to get a brand new engine (which was covered by warranty) to continue driving my 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT.

To be clear, I had purchased the best warranty at the time which covered my car up until 120,000 miles.

As I was driving to work, my car acted in unexpected ways:

  • Decreased acceleration

  • Reduced top speed

  • Loud ticking noise or engine knock

When I reached an independent car repair shop they reported to me the following about the engine during their diagnosis:

"It’s knocking and there are metal shavings in the oil from the engine. The engine is blown."

*Pro-tip: Pull over and ask for a tow as soon as you notice decreases in acceleration and speed.

What costs did Hyundai help reimburse?

  • Tow truck expense

  • Rental Car expense

  • Uber expense; to and from the rental car dealerships

Over the next 3-4 months, Hyundai paid for all my rental car expenses. Though, I was able to drive Hyundai's courtesy car for at least 2 months.

What took so long to get my car repaired by Hyundai?

At first, Hyundai received a brand new engine to install into my car. Though, that first engine arrived damaged.

Another few weeks went by before Hyundai finally received the second engine which they had subsequently installed.

After finally receiving an engine replacement, the check engine light appeared. Though, this was due to a bad catalytic converter that was installed on my car, which was before my engine blew the first time.

Which Hyundai dealer replaced the blown engine?

I am thankful to The Empire Hyundai Dealership of New Rochelle, NY!

They have a new and improved Service Center facility that is quite nice! It enables people to easily drive their car into the facility for immediate attention.

What was Hyundai's recall about?

There was an open recall about the "engine monitoring logic."

This means that there should have been a warning light to signal to me that the engine was nearing failure just before the engine blew out.

Thankfully, I intuitively moved over to the slower lanes on the highway to deal with the loss of power from my engine.

The power of the engine sustained me long enough to get the car to a nearby car repair shop.

Are others be eligible to get a brand new engine from Hyundai to fix their engine problem?

Hyundai says that every case is different. They must submit individual findings and contact the warranty department.

Thankfully, there was something called the Hyundai Protection Plan that was "active" in my case. Likely due to the fact that I had purchased an extended warranty.

Rental Car #1

Toyota Car Rental

I rented this car for just over a month.

This was necessary because the Hyundai Courtesy Car was not yet available.

Rental Car (Hyundai Courtesy Car) #2

Hyundai Courtesy Car

Once the Hyundai Courtesy Car was available I was able to use this car for transportation without having to worry about running up a bill for Hyundai to pay.

Rental Car #3 (Not Pictured)

I had to rent one last rental car due to the faulty catalytic converter replacement which had issues before the engine blew on my car the first time.

The catalytic converter was entirely unrelated to the engine failure.
